 Dhanteras 

The day before Deepavali.

Dhanteras is a combination of two words. 'Dhan' denotes wealth, and 'Teras' denotes the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi, Ganesha, Dhanvantari, and Lord Kubera are worshipped during the puja.

I lit 13 lamps in front of Lakshmi , Ganesha photo. Offered neivedyam and water.

Recited Lalitha Sahasranamam, bhagya sukatam and sang songs on ambal .

Out side the house ,I lit 4 lamps facing south for Lord Yama . It's called Yama deepam.

Also listened to Dhanavantri stothram and kubera stuthi.

Thidhi in Pitru Paksha Kalam / Shraddam for Ancestors

Today, 11th October 2023, sarav and shakthi Offered Thidhi for their father in Amma Mandapam, Srirangam . Also sarav mentioned my Dad and mom name .

Today is not the Thidhi for my FIL. But these 16 days from Oct 4 to Oct 14 is considered as good time and pitru paksha kalam to offer Thidhi for ancestors

When you keep doing the shraddam rituals for our ancestors, it will not only remove doshas and keep our future generation prosperous but most importantly it will also heal our entire ancestral line. 

When you offer Shradham , you become an important  point contact , 

to remove all the ancestral curses of the ancestral line.

Those who are dead and gone will be going forward in their spiritual growth ,their blockages will be removed . They will be reborn into a good environment and will lead a prosperous life or will attain moksha.

Their blessings and happiness  will make us and our future generation prosperous

 Its everyone's duty to do this.

In fact it is a very important duty. 

Also when one die , they  would not like to come back to you and they would expect not to have any blockages in their soul path.

 So when we think or cry about them , we are actually holding them back  ,and  they will not appreciate it . They need to get detached from this bond. And this shradam is important for them to break this bondage and move on without guilt, or any kind of attachment.

This sharaddam is performed for 3 generations of Pitru.

It is believed that all the sins committed by the deceased ancestors are removed through this Shradh

Reading texts such as Garuda Purana, Agni Purana, etc. are considered to be very auspicious during Pitru Paksha Shradh.

At Trichy Emily Cottage. We must also keep a savings pot to put money . At our home we have a copper pot. In that we put raw rice , Tulsi and money every year. When we visit Perumal temple ,we deposit this money in temple hundial.

The usual menu is 3 / or 5/ or 7 types of rice, with pepper vadai and payasam

Traditional Neivedyam for Krishna : 

Butter , Milk , milk sweets like Peda, banana , snacks like Seedai ,Muruku ,sundal ,  Aval Payasam , 

Place Laddu Gopal inside a small basket or Jhoola

Flowers : Krishna likes Jasmine , Mullai , Sampangi, and Parijatham flowers .Don't forget the Tulasi malai and offer tulasi water to Lord Krishna.

Onion and Garlic should not be used in food on this day, because garlic onion is kept in the tamasic category. Meat and liquor should not be consumed. It is believed that Lord Krishna loves animals; he was especially very fond of cows.

We draw feet of Krishna from outside the entrance to poojaroom using rice flour batter or paint. We can also make small feet in cardboard and place it as if he is entering.

Peacock feathers are favourite for Krishna and also flute. Both can be placed in Pooja room with a nice background .

 Previous day I pray that I must wake up energized to start the cooking . By His grace everything goes well 

A handy karima podi that I use for Ammavasai and Shradham cooking makes cooking a breeze . 

As certain ingredients are not used , the karima podi is used to flavour all dishes . A bulk tempering prepared first thing when I start cooking , is helpful to temper every dish so individual tempering is not required . 

Seperate tempering for rasam and sambar . All left over tempering  will be used up . 

Shradham meal for Brahmins / Davasam sapadu 😁. 

No onion or garlic . I don't add tomato as well.

How To Light A Moksha Deepam

You have to light the moksha Deepam before 6pm or before it gets dark.

Take a large Earthen lamp. 

For making the wick , take a white cotton cloth. Add the following items to the cotton cloth and tie it and make it look like a wick.

The items are 

1. Camphor, zeeragam , paruthi kottai( cotton seeds) ,  rock salt,pepper, nava dhaniya , wheat kernels, thuvarai , green gram ,black sesame seeds ,black urad dhal , horsegram , white mochai and  Channa . Tie in cotton cloth bundle and place it on earthern lamp , pour sesame oil and light . Place it on a banana leaf. Spread navadhaniyam on the leaf and place the lamp and light it.

 It must be placed on higher plane in North East  in front of nandhi . Recite om Nama Shivaya 108 times. Next morning drop all the items in river or sea .

Note: 

The one in the photo is lit by me for my dad in 2021. Its not like what I described above. Its just a large earthern lamp with 1 litre sesame oil and large wick .

On the Day of Deepavali 

Our House Custom 

The Deepavali, The Amavasai and The Kedhara Gowri Nombu in the Iypassi Month is a very important pooja ritual in our caste and community.

We are part of Mudaliar community.

On the early morning hours on the Deepavali day 

We wake up early morning during Brahma muhurtam hours.

Before bath , we place two bananas, few betal leaves, Kotta pakku( tamboolam) along with four things in a tamboolam plate. 

Next we must light a Agal lamp.

Previous Night Agenda: 

The agal lamp must be kept ready the previous night itself . 

Apply Kumkum Manjal on agal lamp, pour oil and place cotton wick. And keep them ready with Arti plate. ( Arti Plate : Karpura dhoopam , Pancha pathiram and bell) Put some vibhooti in the karpoora dhoopam and keep the camphors ready for next morning. Keep the Snanam set , new dress and any jewel that you purchase also ready for next day morning.

Some people make the rangoli, home devor during previous day itself .

Next morning  place all the four things( see below)  along with your new clothes and do a Dheeba aradhanai to our gods.

Apply Manjal Kumkum to new dress and place a flower on top of the dress.

 Pray for a healthy life for all your family members.

The four things are

1. Medicated Herbal Sesame oil

2. Herbal Bath Powder mixed with sandal powder and rose water.

3. Arugampul ( Bermuda grass) 

4. Shikkai powder 

We must apply the oil and massage and then take head bath .

This is Deepavali Snanam.

After bath , we must cook the neivedyams sweets,snacks and then do Pillayar pooja and offer neivedyam and do the Deepavali pooja for the day .

 The Kalasam Plate 

Things to Take to temple .

In our family we go to temple where the Gowri nombu kalasam will be kept. In Trichy , the Gowri nombu kalasam is kept in Kallakuzhi Anjaneyar Temple. In 2021 I took the nombu in Trichy Kallakuzhi Anjaneyar Temple only.

What are the things to take in the plate.

1. Banana - 1 dozen 

2. Flowers 

3. Betal leaf / Vethalai 

4. Turmeric powder 

5. Kumkum powder 

6. Verali manjal 

7. Kotta pakku 

8. Coconut 

9. Kadholai Karumani 

10. Nombu kairu ( according to number of inmates of a family) 

11. Wooden comb 

12. Mirror optional .

13. Adhirasam - made at home in a basin( kept exclusive only for pooja rituals) 

14. Udhiri pookal ( Loose flowers ) for archanai 

15. Camphor 

16. Udhavathi 

17. Dakshinam coins or notes to give in temple 

18. Cloth to cover the tambulam plate 

The nombu kairu will be in red color . In our house both gender threads are of same designs. There is no seperate thread for male or female.

An auspicious time has to be seen to buy all the above items.

When visiting temple you can take some ashtothara books to see and recite while doing archanai to ambal in Kalasam.

How to light a kerela lamp

 The traditional lamp of Kerala (‘nilavilakku’) is lighted with five wicks at homes and during special functions and on auspicious occasions like ‘Pournami’ (full moon day). A lamp with five wicks is called ‘Bhadradeepam’. Each of these five burning wicks is believed to represent five faces of Lord Shiva. The auspicious light of the five-wick lamp (or the bhadradeepam in local parlance) is supposed to bring in wealth and prosperity to the house.

Normally, in households, the lamp is lit with two wicks each joined together and directed towards the East and West in the morning and evening. However, in a Bhadradeepam, each wick and the way it is lit have much significance. Two wicks for each direction are merged together in the form of folded hands have to be placed in the four main directions - east, west, north and south. The fifth wick has to face northeast, which is termed ‘Eassana Kone’ in astrology. That too should have two wicks joined in the shape of praying hands.

When lighting a Bhadradeepam, the first wick that has to be lighted is the one on the northeast or east direction. This should be followed by lighting other wicks in a symbolic circumambulation pattern - East, South, West and North.

How A Hindu Couple should Prostrate and worship in front of God in a Temple

 This is a sculpture which tells about how a hindu couple should prostrate in a temple and worship  the god in the temple.

Neivedyam : Black Sesame Kozhukattai, Black Sundal ,Jaggery Kozhukattai, Ulundhu Vadai ,Avaal Payasam , Pori ,Odachakadalai , Banana , Sugarcane ,Corn Cob, Perapa pazham,Naval Pazham,betal leaves,kotta pakku,and Coconut ,Avarakai Sambar,Potatoe Varuval,White Rice ,Ghee.
Serve in Banana Leaf .

Ritual : Buy 1 feet clay Ganesha without colour . It must have eyes given as red seed in the market.
Do poojai ,and abhishekam for house pillayar and the clay ganesha together.Use milk,curd , gold jewels, honey , fruit mixture,  rose water for doing Abhishekam to the Ganesha Idols.
Keep Gold/ Silver coin on Ganesha Thoppai ( Stomach )  after abhishekam .
Put New Angaavastram ( Dress)and Umbrella for Ganesha .

Flowers : Eerukam poo , Arugampul grass and Samandhi flowers ,Pavazha malli.

Other things needed for poojai are:
Agarbathi,Camphor, Sambrani, Sandal Powder,Turmeric powder, Kukumam ,sesame lamp oil with Silver Kamakshi lamp and wick

Use Pooja thirtham in Panchapathiram with tulasi leaves, along  silver plate,silver bell, all in a Silver dhoopam plate.Also keep dry fruits in a silver cup and Aval Payasam in Silver tumbler.
Place Ganesha on a wooden manai with kolam drawn on it.Tie Fresh Green Mango leaves as thoranam in the entrance door of your house early in the morning before you start the poojai. Put colourful rangoli at the entrance door with two clay diyas at the entrance all before poojai starts.
Play vinayagar bhakthi songs as Audio music.Recite Ganesha Pancharathinam and pillayar slokams during and after poojai .You can also keep new bill book and receipt book to start as new year account.

You can immerse the Clay Ganesha the first ,third or fifth night only. Serve banana with pakku amd betal leaves asneivedyam to Ganesha. Show Karpooram and finish the visarjan.Place  Ganesha on a bucket of water or drop him in the house well.

Aadi Pooram, also called as ‘Aandal Jayanti’ is a prime festival of Tamilians. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Andal, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Aadi Pooram is celebrated during the month of ‘Aadi’ in Tamil calendar that corresponds to the months of July-August in the English calendar. Aadi Pooram is the celebration of the birth day of Andal and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour in the places all over the world that is populated by the Tamils. The day of Aadi Pooram is also observed as the day of Goddess Shakti as it is believed that the Goddess herself comes to Earth in this auspicious day, to bless Her devotees. The devotees therefore worship their deity with full dedication to lead a happy and prosperous life.
The Word ‘Aadi’ signifies the fourth month in the Tamil calendar while ‘Pooram’ denotes one of the 27 Nakshatras mentioned in the Hindu Astrology. The story of Goddess Andal is known all through the state of Tamil Nadu and her devotion to Sri Ranganatha (a form of Lord Vishnu) is widespread in the whole of southern India. The celebrations of Aadi Pooram are very splendid in almost all the Lord Vishnu temples located in Tamil Nadu. The day also holds immense significance in Goddess Shakti temples scattered all over the country. In the Saiva temples, the day of Aadi Pooram is observed as the festival of ‘Valaikappu’. In the event, glass bangles are offered to Goddess Andal and then distributed among all devotees. It is believed that by wearing these bangles, the couples will be blessed with offspring and also when pregnant women wear these bangles; it shields their child from all the evil forces.

Rituals during Aadi Pooram:

• Aadi Pooram is a 10-day festival observed with great pomp and show in all Lord Vishnu temples in the state of Tamil Nadu. Of these, the last day (10th day) is observed as ‘Aadi Pooram’ and a grand marriage ceremony of Goddess Andal and Sri Ranganathaswamy is conducted. This event is also known as ‘Thirukalyanam’.
• On the day of Aadi Pooram, the women of the household get up early and start making the preparations. They decorate their house beautifully with kolam. Goddess Andal is fond of lotus flower, red color and kalkandu rice. The women of the household make an elaborate meal for offering to the Goddess.
• In the temples, Goddess Andal is adorned with silk saree, glittering jewelleries and garlands. An elaborate feast is offered to the Goddess that is contributed by every household in the community. As the festival of Aadi Pooram celebrated the marriage of God and Goddess, thousands of devotees visit the temples to witness this ceremony.
• Special rituals are performed on this day that is accompanied by playing the traditional music. The celebrations continue till late at night and then after the ‘aarti’ the food is distributed among the devotees.
• On this auspicious day, the devotees also read the ‘Thiruppavai’ and ‘Lalitha Sahasranamam’.

 The celebration of Aadi Pooram is very elaborate in the Goddess Andal temple at ‘Srivalliputtur’, which is the birth place of Aandal located in Tamil Nadu. This festival is also observed as a big event at ‘Srirangam Sri Ranganath Temple’ for a period of ten days. On the last day, the marriage ceremony of Lord Ranganatha and Andal is held with great pomp and show. It is a popular belief that unmarried girls who worship Goddess Andal on the last day will very soon get married. Moreover when the festival of Aadi Pooram falls on a Friday, as per the belief, it becomes more auspicious and the celebrations become more elaborate with countless rituals.

The Goddess will bless the women and hears all the desires of them and fulfills the wishes. Women will pray for the good health of their husbands. This pooja is performed with a Kalasam closed with coconut.

How to Worship the Goddess Shakthi on Aadi Velli

1. Chakkarai Pongal and Payasam are cooked on this day and offered to the Goddess.

2. Lemon Malai is offered to Kamakshi Amman to get divine protection and to remove obstacles.

3. Thamboolam is given to five Sumangalis. Thamboolam is nothing but KumKum, turmeric, beetel leaves, thali kayiru, banana and flowers. One can even offer blouse bits or sarees too.

4. Offer Milk and Egg to the Nagam.

5. Light ghee lamps to the Goddess Lakshmi.
